My best friend ("Harry") died about 10 years ago from cocaine and alcohol abuse. We were not involved physically, just very good friends. We were friends since we were 10 YOA.
I'm wondering if Harry was gay and that if that might have led to his drug and alcohol problems.
Harry lived in a small town. It was the kind of town that everyone knew everything about you. It was like living under a microscope. Harry was a respected member of the community. He was involved in politics. He was good looking. He was well liked. His father was rich and a general a**hole. Harry had more than enough money.
Harry was married three times, once to a woman who could have been his mother's sister, once to a younger girl, and once to someone who was one step above a prostitute. All the marriages ended in divorces. He never had kids.
First, he told me several times that he never had sex with a woman until after he graduated from college. He told me this while he was in college. When he finally had sex with a woman, he told me all about it.
It is strange that (a) he never had sex until he was 23 and (b) that he would tell me about it at 23. I was surprised since everybody else I knew had had sex by the time they graduated HS. He dated girls in high school and had a couple of six month or longer relationships, but he never got laid.
When we were 13 or so, he wanted one time to talk to me about how I masturbated. He liked hanging out with boys much more than hanging out with girls. He continued that in HS, college and after college. He never had any interest in raising a family.
When he was in his 30s, he only had a couple of male friends in the small town where he lived, and didn't really date anyone. I met him for a beer a couple of time out of town, and he always had a group of male friends with him who were not from his home town.
His first wife hinted that having sex with Harry was a little strange. She had an affair and left him. His other two marriages were disasters.
What do you think? Is there a good chance that Harry was gay?
